To welcome the first Word of the Week flash blog for 2022, we thought we’d gift you with not one but two words to get your writing brain fired up. The aim is to learn quirky terms, some that have been lost over the years, to add to your writing repertoire.

And with that, here is the first word:

Now, you’d be forgiven for thinking this isn’t a real word – I had to do a double take myself on this one. It may be something you’ve used before or thought you’d made up an awesome new word (haven’t we all had those moments?).

Crapulous is exactly how it sounds – feeling unwell or ill, usually from drinking too much alcohol but is also associated with overindulging in food, aka, a horrible food coma.

You may feel crapulous after a night out, a celebration or a family feast. I was certainly crapulous after Christmas and that weird week between Christmas and New Year (where you don’t know what day it is or time zone you’re in).

Our second word is:

Groke is a traditional Scottish word and is familiar to those who have ever had the pleasure of having a canine companion.

To groke means to stare at someone while they are eating, wishing that they will share their food with you.

My pup grokes all day, every day. So does my best friend, now I think of it, who never orders a side of chips (fries) with her meal, but longing looks at mine as I eat them.

We look forward to sharing the next Word of the Week flash blog with you.

In the meantime, happy writing!
